Operations Engineer – Mechanical

Who We Are

Zinfra is a leading partner in the design, build, operation and maintenance of Australia’s energy and utilities infrastructure. Delivering over $1B portfolio annually, the work we do is essential to bringing energy to our communities safely and reliably, while powering the nation’s energy transition. With a diverse workforce of more than 2,300, we expertly deliver our services across Australia.

About the role:

At Zinfra, we’re committed to fostering a safe, sustainable, and connected energy future. As a Mechanical Engineer in our Projects and Construction team, you will play a critical role in the design, construction, and ongoing maintenance of our gas infrastructure assets.

Working across the full asset lifecycle—from preliminary design through to delivery and handover—you will help ensure that our assets are safe, compliant, and built for long-term performance. Your work will directly contribute to the integrity and reliability of the AS2885 and AS4645 Asset Class while supporting Zinfra’s commercial and operational goals.

Your work will involve developing and guiding high-quality:

  • Preliminary engineering designs following the opportunity and FEED phases
  • Fit-for-purpose technical solutions that progress projects through detailed design, procurement, and construction
  • Asset performance and integrity assessments
  • Operational support across engineering functions
  • Engineering investigations and transparent reporting

As part of a newly formed engineering team within Zinfra, you will also play a key role in shaping and developing team capability, systems, and processes. This will involve contributing to new initiatives, bringing innovative thinking, and helping to establish a high-performing, collaborative team environment.

You’ll help us build resilient, cost-effective systems by working closely across functions to ensure our infrastructure is designed, delivered, and maintained to meet operational and safety goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the end-to-end delivery of gas infrastructure projects, including preliminary design, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning
  • Develop and review mechanical designs, ensuring compliance with Zinfra standards and relevant codes such as AS2885 and AS4041
  • Prepare and review technical documents, including scopes of work, datasheets, construction work packs, ITPs, and commissioning documentation
  • Provide site-based engineering support during construction and commissioning phases to resolve issues, clarify design intent, and ensure quality
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, project managers, field teams, and contractors to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions safely and on schedule
  • Contribute to HAZOPs, constructability reviews, risk assessments, and lessons learned sessions
  • Assist in ensuring asset information is accurately captured and handed over into operational systems following project completion
  • Support the growth and development of the engineering team, helping to build tools, templates, and processes that enhance team capability and project delivery

About You

You’re a technically capable and solutions-focused engineer who thrives in a fast-paced project environment. You take pride in delivering high-quality, safe, and compliant infrastructure that meets real operational needs. Whether you're supporting design development, solving problems on site, or coordinating with delivery partners, you approach your work with ownership and a practical mindset.

You’re also a strong team player who values collaboration and is motivated to help build a high-performing, supportive team environment. As part of a growing Projects and Construction team, you are eager to contribute to new initiatives, share your knowledge, and continuously improve how we deliver work at Zinfra.

You’ll also bring:

  • A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering
  • Registration as a Certified or Registered Professional Engineer (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience delivering engineering solutions in construction, commissioning, or operations environments
  • Familiarity with Australian gas infrastructure and relevant standards (e.g. AS2885, AS4041)
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a balance of technical rigour and practical application
  • A proactive approach to teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement
