Mechanical Project Engineer – Materials Handling / Packaging

Our Melbourne team are looking for a Mechanical Project Engineer to deliver innovative solutions in materials handling and packaging systems across the food & beverage, waste recovery (MRFs), and parcel/baggage handling sectors.


This role will see you working through the full project lifecycle – from design and specification to installation, commissioning, and client handover. You will be hands-on with conveyors, packaging lines, automation, robotic systems, sorting equipment, and bulk handling machinery, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and coordinate the construction, modification, and maintenance of materials handling equipment.
  • Develop layouts, process schemes, and technical specifications for tenders and construction.
  • Manage the delivery of design documentation to budget and programme.
  • Monitor and coordinate installation, commissioning, and onsite activities.
  • Assess and negotiate design variations, controlling costs and resources.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, contractors, and design teams.
  • Identify risks and deliver effective engineering solutions.

About You

  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Experience across end-to-end project delivery (design → construction → commissioning).
  • Background in one or more of the following:
    • Food & Beverage: packaging lines, filling equipment, CIP systems, conveyors.
    • Waste Recovery (MRFs): shredders, sorters, balers, screening systems, bulk handling.
    • Parcel / Baggage Handling: baggage conveyors, sortation systems, ASRS, airport automation.
  • Strong knowledge of conveyors, robotics, automation, bulk and unit load handling equipment.
  • Knowledge of process engineering design codes, procedures and practices and computer-based design processes.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Willingness to work onsite across Australia when required.
