Critical Facilities Engineer (HVAC/Mechanical)

At Equinix our Critical Facilities Engineers operate, manage, maintain and repair critical and non-critical Power systems, HVAC, plumbing, fire control and suppression, and all site services, and performs all related vendor support in a mission critical environment.  

 

This role supports the overall functioning of the Data Center by focusing on maintaining and improving the facility’s critical infrastructure. This includes all regularly scheduled maintenance and ad hoc repairs/troubleshooting. 

 

We have sites in Rosehill, Silverwater, Mascot and Alexandria and the position would suit a recently qualified Electrician (happy to talk to candidates nearing the end of their apprenticeship) or developing Electrical Engineering Degree holder who is able to adapt to a new environment quickly. We have a broad and diverse engineering team who work across disciplines, and after initially shadowing experienced colleagues, you will build your confidence and experience within the facility operations.

 

Data center experience will be welcomed but is not required, but a technical aptitude and willingness to develop your expertise within a collaborative team is a must. Hands-on experience in a service role and a positive attitude will also be highly regarded.

 

Key responsibilities: 

·       Completes all maintenance protocols, plans, activities on time and accurately, including daily, weekly and monthly site checks 

·       Manage and oversee specialist vendors for all major works, planned repairs and maintenance to mechanical, electrical and special systems 

·       Performs minor changes to mechanical, electrical and special systems if necessary   

·       Ensures that sufficient spare parts are available on site for frequently used parts or parts with long lead times and maintains critical spares register  

·       Monitors for and responds to BMS (Building Monitoring System) alarms in accordance with engineering policies and procedures, escalating to and working with Controls Engineering team where required.  

·       Oversee plumbing and fire suppression systems vendor activities 

·       Edits and tracks the work approval process for service providers (including briefing at the start of work, control of work during the day, final review of the work carried out)  

·       Recommend changes/updates to technical files for plants and equipment in cooperation with vendor, and the supervisors, ensuring as built are up to date 

·       Creates engineering scripts (switching schedules)  

·       Ensures that all Equinix safety standards are followed, as well quality procedures related to maintenance, including all Incident Management 

·       Reviews processes, procedures, systems. Communicates process deviations and proposed changes to a higher level so that relevant follow-up measures can be carried out  

·       Develops training and supports training of other IBX (International Business Exchange) employees in relevant engineering topics and processes 

·       Provides guidance and mentoring to junior engineers within the team 

 

 

Qualifications, key skills and attributes required:  

·       Willingness to learn all aspects of our critical facilities engineering tasks and adapt quickly to new responsibilities

·       Electrical Trade Certificate or Degree Certified (requirement of the role)

·       Basic knowledge or understanding of electrical, mechanical and controls

·       Understanding and exposure troubleshooting and repairing basic mechanical or electrical systems. 

·       Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in time-sensitive situations. 

·       Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. 

·       Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload effectively. 

·       Be capable of acquiring and maintaining HV operators’ qualification and NV1 Security Clearance 

·       Collaborative mindset but also with the drive to complete assigned tasks autonomously when required
