Harness your expertise as a Fitter and CNC Machinist to work in our Technical Support Services Workshops
Base Salary HEO6 $103,185 - $111,237 p.a. + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
We are looking for a skilled Technical Officer – Workshop (Fitter/CNC Machinist) with experience in machining and/or fabrication workshops to join the team and deliver timely and effective technical services within the University of Sydney’s Camperdown Campus workshops.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative team within the Technical Support Services Workshops portfolio. This team is responsible for delivering excellent client-focused support of teaching and research activities across multiple schools and faculties at the University of Sydney, through supporting safe and engaging teaching spaces and utilising industry leading machinery to manufacture research support equipment across the University’s network of workshops.
This includes provision of hands-on technical support for teaching laboratories, technical demonstrations and research support as required. It also includes maintenance of equipment and safe working environments, provision of technical advice to users (academic staff/teaching staff/researchers). This role works closely with clients to develop prototypes from concept to design and manufacturing. This includes fabrication of custom components, documenting detailed specifications and tolerances, and sourcing materials, tools and parts.
The role will be principally located in the Physics Building (A28) on the Camperdown campus but may be required to assist at other locations across the broader University workshop network.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
support the agreed delivery of technical services within the Camperdown workshops
support the implementation of service improvements
deliver excellent customer service and support
support the effective utilisation of resources within the workshops
champion best practices, workplace health & safety, compliance, and risk management
lead by example in personal and professional development.
About you

trade qualifications in Fitting and Machining/Tool making with relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant training and practical experience
proven ability to operate machine workshop equipment such as but not limited to milling machines, lathes, drills, grinders, wood working machines, and MIG and TIG welding machines
proven ability to set-up, program and operate CNC machinery such as vertical CNC machining centres (up to 4 axis), CNC turning centres (4 axis) and EDM (wire cutting) machines. (Knowledge of laser and waterjet cutters with experience on Makino CNC machines is advantageous)
experience in or willingness to learn to use CAD and CAM software (SolidWorks and Mastercam or similar)
proven ability in CAD/CAM programming, with experience or willingness to learn other software packages as required (SolidWorks and Mastercam or similar)
experience in reading and interpreting engineering drawings to ensure accuracy and to perform Precision Machining work as per job requirements
demonstrated track record in developing prototypes and custom precision equipment in a research environment, or a similar industry
experience in ensuring a safe workshop environment through maintaining a high standard of WH&S, including experience in compiling/following risk assessments and safe work procedures
ability to establish and maintain working relationships with customers and fellow staff
experience in effectively communicating and engaging with clients to understand technical requirements as related to their teaching/research needs (experience in supporting HDR students is desirable).
