About the role

As a Senior Mechanical Design Drafter specialising in Building Information Modelling

(BIM) and 3D modelling, you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of experienced engineers and drafters to produce high-quality mechanical design documentation for water infrastructure projects.

Your role will focus on developing and coordinating detailed 3D models, BIM content, and technical drawings to support feasibility studies, conceptual, functional, and detailed design phases.

In this senior capacity, you will also provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members, ensuring that all BIM models and design deliverables are accurate, comply with project requirements, and adhere to both industry and company standards

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate advanced technical proficiency in mechanical design drafting, applying sound engineering judgement and expertise to complex mechanical design tasks.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and professionally formatted documentation, including detailed mechanical design drawings, specifications, and models, ensuring all outputs meet industry and CMP standards.
  • Independently produce and review high-quality mechanical engineering drawings and collaborate effectively with engineers and other drafters to achieve optimal design outcomes.
  • Receive only minor suggestions for improvement during technical reviews, with no fundamental errors or basic quality and presentation issues, reflecting a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Effectively manage your own workload, ensuring timely delivery of mechanical drafting tasks within budget, and proactively communicate expectations, progress, and any arising issues to relevant stakeholders.
  • Lead or coordinate mechanical drafting projects, delivering outcomes that meet program, cost, quality, and client satisfaction targets, while seeking guidance as needed on more complex matters.
  • Develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with peers and key contacts within client organisations, fostering collaboration and trust.

About You

This role will require you to have the following technical skills and qualifications:

  • Certificate or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Drafting/Design, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 7–10 years’ experience in mechanical design drafting within industrial, infrastructure, or resources projects.
  • Demonstrated experience producing and managing detailed mechanical design documentation, including 3D models, mechanical layouts, general arrangements (GAs), fabrication details, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and equipment schedules.
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant Australian Standards and applicable international codes related to mechanical and piping design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (2D and 3D), AutoCAD Plant 3D, Revit, or similar mechanical drafting and modelling software.
  • Familiarity with BIM processes, coordination workflows, and document management systems, including revision control.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with multiple disciplines (mechanical, process, electrical, civil, and control systems) to deliver integrated design packages.
  • Previous experience working within an engineering consultancy, EPCM environment, or in a mechanical design role for a contractor or asset owner.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality deliverables, including the ability to check and review work completed by others.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment.
