The Opportunity

Come and discover the opportunity to join our Metal Coating Lines (MCL) Maintenance Team at our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as a Mechanical Trades Assistant. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

As an experienced Mechanical Trades Assistant, you will be responsible for supporting the maintenance and repair of plant equipment and infrastructure. Working closely with qualified Mechanical Tradespeople, you will assist in a range of day-to-day operational tasks to ensure the efficient and safe functioning of our mechanical systems. In addition to your primary duties, you will also be required to perform responsibilities as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator when needed.

What Will You Do?

In a role that impacts the safety of our people as well as the quality and reliability of our equipment and products, you will:

  • assist with equipment set up and performing maintenance related work
  • carryout inspections and lubrication tasks to ensure equipment is operating as required
  • safe operation of forklifts
  • participating in rigging and dogging of equipment as required, as well as operating cranes
  • basic oxy cutting and welding
  • maintain work area in a safe and tidy condition
  • determine task related hazards & then develop JSEAs to control these hazards
  • contribute to the team delivery of maintenance tasks including afterhours support as required
  • provide backup support to operate the wastewater treatment plant

As a Mechanical Trades Assistant, you’ll have a forward-thinking approach to work and activity contribute to the larger team. You will bring:

  • strong mechanical aptitude
  • a HRW Forklift, Dogging and Rigging licence with experience
  • experience as a trade assistant in a heavy industrial environment
  • an enthusiasm to learn new skills and develop yourself in the role
