Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.  In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. 

Job Description

As our Mechanical Engineering Manager (MEM), you will be accountable for delivering annual maintenance targets for equipment. This includes providing technical advice to the Long-Term Planner and Maintenance Superintendents to optimise equipment availability and reliability in your area. The MEM is a statutory position responsible for establishing and maintaining mechanical maintenance practices compliant with the Coal Mining Act and Regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with mechanical engineering practices at the mine.
  • Maintain legal standards for mechanical plant, equipment, and personnel.
  • Establish and maintain compliant, safe, efficient, reliable, and cost-effective mechanical engineering systems and procedures.
  • Seek to improve performance through engineering enhancements.
  • Develop and communicate mechanical engineering strategies and plans to the workforce, demonstrating strong leadership.
  • Establish and implement training competencies to ensure relevant personnel are trained and authorised to meet legal standards.
  • Contribute to the development and ongoing management of a reliable 5-year maintenance and engineering plan.
  • Develop rolling weekly plans and schedules to deliver target availability and reliability of specified mining equipment.
  • Establish standards and provide “Signoff” on mechanical plant, equipment design, specifications, and mechanical personnel qualifications.
  • Ensure statutory mechanical overhauls are carried out to the required standard in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  •  Monitor maintenance expenditure to identify budget variances and improvement or corrective activities to reduce operating costs.

Qualifications

 

  • Mechanical trade with extensive underground coal mining experience
  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering as well a post graduate qualification in maintenance management will be highly regarded.
  • Significant experience in asset management.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to enforce mechanical engineering standards.
  • High-level understanding of regulatory standards for statutory compliance in mechanical activities at the mine.
