The Opportunity
At APA, our purpose is to secure Australia’s energy future. We’re not doing it alone. We’re doing it with our customers and communities as Australia’s energy infrastructure partner, a role our unique experience and expertise positions us to play.
We now have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Infrastructure Delivery team on a full‑time, permanent basis.
Reporting to the Manager Development Engineering, you will play a critical role in shaping the earliest stages of APA’s gas infrastructure programs in a front‑end, concept-focused capacity. You will provide high‑level mechanical and pipeline engineering leadership that frames project direction, screens technical options, and establishes the preliminary design foundations for major infrastructure decisions. Your work will ensure mechanical solutions are viable, safe, and optimised for FEL‑1 (Concept) and FEL‑2 (Select) gates, forming the technical basis that will later guide detailed engineering teams.
The location for this role is flexible and hybrid, and we welcome applicants from across Australia.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver high‑level mechanical and pipeline engineering artefacts required for FEL‑1 and FEL‑2, focusing on concept definition, technical screening, and early‑stage feasibility
Evaluate mechanical options at a conceptual level, assessing constructability, operability, safety, equipment suitability, layout constraints, and cost‑efficiency
Lead the development of preliminary Mechanical and Pipeline Design Specifications and input to the Preliminary Design Basis
Drive early‑stage integrity and safety considerations, leading mechanical input into MCA studies and identifying potential fatal‑flaw risks before Select gate
Integrate lean design principles, emissions‑reduction opportunities, and future‑fuel considerations into early mechanical configurations
Ensure concept‑level designs align with APA and Australian standards and establish pathways for compliance for new or emerging technologies
Represent mechanical engineering in early risk workshops (HAZID, SID, emissions screening), shaping concept direction and risk posture
Collaborate with Concept Study Leads, Front‑End Design, and multidisciplinary stakeholders to ensure mechanical inputs align with study schedules and strategic needs
Contribute to engineering consistency by developing templates, guidelines, and lessons learned specific to concept‑level mechanical design
Your background
Deep understanding of mechanical and pipeline engineering with strong experience in front‑end concept or feasibility‑stage engineering
Proven ability to define mechanical scope and high‑level configurations without requiring detailed design, calculations, or complex modelling
Skilled in identifying technical, constructability, and operability risks early in the lifecycle
Experience leading mechanical inputs into FEL‑1 and FEL‑2, including option screening, early configuration development, and conceptual layout considerations
Strong capability in representing mechanical engineering in multidisciplinary risk workshops
Ability to apply lean design, emissions‑reduction principles, and innovative solutions at the conceptual stage
Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and align mechanical direction across engineering, commercial, and regulatory groups
