A Personal Appeal: We’re Looking for the Next ‘Pete’!

This is a genuine call-out. For years, Pete has been The Backbone of Three Mills.

There isn’t much he can’t do. And believe us when we say, we’ve tried our best to find something… Pete is the highly accountable, fiercely independent, seriously skilled person who keeps our entire bakery world turning.

But Pete wants to properly retire. Even though we’re stoked for him, we’re also mildly terrified about replacing him!

That’s where you come in. We need someone who likes to tinker, fix, build, solve problems, and eat delicious baked goods on the daily. If you fit the broadest job description ever, and you’re someone cut from a different cloth, we’d love to talk.

This role is flexible and will be shaped around the skills of the right applicant—it’s perfect for someone stepping into or out of retirement, or anyone who thrives on diverse, hands-on challenges.

THE DETAILS: What the Role Involves

Location: Canberra, ACT (Across multiple sites)

Work Type: Full-time, Part-time, or Flexible. Let’s discuss the hours that work for you.

The purpose of this role is to be the independent force responsible for all preventative maintenance and creative solutions across our bakery production and retail sites. You will live and breathe our values: Stay Curious, Lead with Generosity, and Create Joy by ensuring our operations run smoothly.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Technical Troubleshooting: Diagnosing and repairing basic mechanical or electrical issues (e.g., repairing belts in our giant dough mixer).

Trade Coordination & Liaison: You will be the essential link between our internal teams and external experts. This means coordinating and liaising with licensed tradespeople (e.g., electricians, mechanics, refrigeration techs) for complex or licensable work.

Welding & Fabrication: Repairing or creating necessary brackets, benches, hinges, hoppers, and minor structures.

Construction & Fit-Out: Assisting with minor renovations, general building maintenance, and fitting out our beautiful new retail stores.

Installation Coordination: Working with external contractors to receive and install complex new bakery equipment.

General Maintenance: Painting, minor plumbing, general repairs, and property upkeep (the list is long, like painting the Sydney Harbour Bridge).

Property Aesthetics: Keeping the areas around our shops alive, looking beautiful, and reflecting the joy we create inside.

We’re Looking For Someone Who:

– Has a diverse, highly practical, and proven hands-on skill set (e.g., maintenance, welding, handyman, or trade experience).

– Is fiercely independent, reliable, and highly accountable—you can manage your own schedule and priorities effectively.

– Is a natural problem-solver who approaches every challenge with a Stay Curious mindset.

– Has strong communication skills and can Lead with Generosity when coordinating with our internal artisan teams and external tradespeople.

– Holds a current Driver’s License (essential for travel between sites).
