The Role

We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer - Commissioning to provide technical leadership through final delivery and transition to operations.

Reporting to the Manager, Commissioning, you will lead commissioning activities, resolve complex system challenges, and drive plant performance. This is a senior role overseeing engineers, technicians, and operations personnel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning and integration of complex mechanical systems, ensuring safe, compliant, and operationally ready outcomes
  • Provide engineering leadership and team oversight across commissioning engineers, technicians, and operations personnel
  • Drive technical problem-solving and optimisation, diagnosing issues, resolving deficiencies, and improving overall plant performance
  • Manage system interfaces and integration, ensuring reliability and alignment across multidisciplinary functions
  • Oversee mechanical performance and verification, including rotating equipment, system alignment, startup, and maintenance strategies
  • Ensure compliance with standards and quality requirements, embedding Australian standards, QA processes, and Safety in Design principles

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong commissioning experience on major infrastructure projects (desalination, water, energy or similar)
  • Solid knowledge of mechanical systems (pumps, compressors, piping, pressure testing)
  • Experience with commissioning phases including flushing, alignment, functional testing, and start-up
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, GA drawings, isometrics, and vendor documentation
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards (ASME, API, ISO)
  • Proven leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams in site-based environments
  • Strong planning and coordination capability, including commissioning schedules, punch lists, and contractor/vendor management
  • Experience with commissioning documentation, test reports, and handover packages
  • Confident communicator with ability to engage across site teams, contractors, and stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with the ability to make decisions under pressure
  • Familiarity with digital tools (commissioning/completions systems, MS Project/Primavera or similar)
