Housekeeping Attendant and Handyperson – Newman College

Join our team at Newman College, a leafy, heritage-listed property located next to the University of Melbourne.

We currently have two great opportunities available:

  • Casual Housekeeping Attendant – 5 days a week, 9am to 12 noon
  • Permanent Part-Time Housekeeping Attendant/ Handyperson – 5 days a week, 12 noon to 5pm

To be eligible, applicants must have Australian Permanent Residency or Citizenship.

We are looking for self-motivated individuals with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to providing excellent service. These roles focus on the daily cleaning of student rooms and common areas, as well as supporting the maintenance team with general tasks.

About Newman College

Newman College is a co-educational residential College affiliated with the University of Melbourne. Accommodating undergraduate and graduate students from metropolitan and regional Victoria, interstate and overseas (approximately 280). The College’s fundamental purpose is to foster the intellectual, ethical and spiritual life of its members, to enable them to become effective leaders in the community, mature in faith and committed to justice.

Key Responsibilities of the roles

Housekeeping Attendant: The casual Housekeeping Attendant will be allocated areas to clean at the beginning of each shift. Duties will include:

  • Cleaning student rooms: vacuuming, dusting and wiping down surfaces.
  • Cleaning bathrooms: sanitising, mopping floors, cleaning bathroom fans, replenish soap and paper towels.
  • Cleaning flats including deep cleaning of bathrooms.
  • Cleaning halls and stairs.
  • Emptying rubbish bins and moving waste to the main hall bin for collection,
  • Reporting damage or repairs required around the college to the Housekeeping Supervisor
  • Deep cleaning when required.

Housekeeping Attendant / Handyperson: The part-time permanent role is a hybrid role working as a Housekeeping Attendant and as the college handy person supporting the Maintenance Supervisor. Duties will include

  • Housekeeping Attendant duties and,
  • Setting up and servicing rooms for conferences
  • Moving furniture for luncheons, conferences and events.
  • Moving furniture to and from student rooms, when required.
  • Assisting with the set-up of venues for functions including room configuration of chairs in the lecture room.
  • Deep cleaning as directed (outside of semesters).
  • Cleaning, washing and maintaining parapets including the removal of any debris that may cause blockages from water or dirt.
  • Other maintenance duties as directed.

About You

  • You are flexible and available to work across a 5-day roster.
  • You have previous experience in cleaning or hospitality (highly desirable).
  • You have a strong understanding of basic hygiene requirements and safe working procedures.
  • You are reliable, punctual, and proactive in your work ethic and are committed to delivering exceptional service.
  • You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • You are capable of lifting heavy items (e.g. furniture) and have experience in general home maintenance and repairs (for the part-time role).
