Job Description

Viva Energy’s Geelong Refinery employs around 700 people and supplies over 50 percent of Victoria’s and 10 percent of Australia’s fuel.

The refinery can process up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day, manufacturing petrol, diesel, LPG, jet fuel, avgas, bitumen, specialty solvents for a wide range of industries.  We now have a great opportunity for a Mechanical Asset Engineer to join the team.

In this role you will collaborate across our Maintenance, Operations and Asset teams to ensure compliance of our equipment in line with Australian, Industry and Site Standards, Procedures, and Government Regulations.  You will directly ensure compliance of static mechanical equipment (pressure vessel, exchangers, piping etc.,) to ensure safe and efficient engineering solutions are maintained in a cost-effective manner to allow our License to Operate.

You will be key in engaging and collaborating with stakeholders across the refinery, providing maintenance, operating, and engineering advice, participating, and contributing to site shut down / turn around activities.

This position is integral to the participation in reliability investigations including root cause analysis and support efforts to improve efficiency of the maintenance process, ensuring work is prioritised to support plant reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Asset Manager, you will provide subject matter expertise (SME) to:

  • Ensure all activities are conducted and managed in accordance with agreed Health, Safety and Environment practices and procedures.
  • Manage the development and execution of the 14-day area maintenance plan.
  • Assists in the development of the Area annual PM plan.
  • Ensure compliance to established planning and scheduling procedures.
  • Develop and coordinate the execution of minor shutdowns and major equipment overhauls.
  • Coordinate and provide technical support for Major Turnarounds events.
  • Support Area Maintenance Manager in the development and implementation of improvement initiatives, including business plans, KPI’s, budget development and cost tracking.
  • Provide leadership and technical support for trade teams.
  • Be the point of contact for technical issues of area assets including cost/benefit decisions on repair methods.
  • Develop and implement plant changes in accordance with ‘Management of Change’ procedures.
  • Provide planning, coordination and technical support for external vendors and contractors for equipment replacement or rectification.
  • Stay current with regulations, industry standards, and technology and industry developments.

Qualifications

About you

  • You are a degree qualified Mechanical Engineer ideally experienced in the petrochemical (or related heavy industry) sector.
  • Can be or are a Registered Engineer with Engineers Australia, Victoria.
  • Experienced with the management of static equipment and compliance management.
  • Able to collaborate effectively and skilled at influencing through others with an ability to engage stakeholders across all levels.
  • Experienced in identifying areas for improvement and able to work cross functionally with other technical areas of the site.
  • Experience with HAZOP and other change management practices (e.g., Management of Change).
  • Experience and holding a demonstrated understanding of the inherent risks and work practices associated with typical maintenance activities on Hydrofluoric Acid process Units (HFA), Sulphur Recovery (SFA) and Amine Regeneration Units (ARU) will be viewed favourably.
