Machine Shop Fitter Breakdown Specialist

Location: Maitland, Cape Town
Salary: R36,000 per month
Medical Aid Allowance: R2,483.91
Bonus: Leave pay-out in December
Annual Leave: 15 days mandatory shutdown during December
Relocation: Possible for the right candidate
Reports to: Toolroom and Maintenance Manager

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Fitter with a strong background in breakdown maintenance, particularly in CNC machinery. This is a hands-on technical role requiring precision, problem-solving, and the ability to work under pressure to ensure minimal downtime in a fast-paced engineering environment.

You will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing mechanical failures, maintaining equipment to optimal operating standards, and ensuring all work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to quality specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform breakdown maintenance on CNC machines, tools, and production equipment.
  • Diagnose faults and identify root causes quickly to minimize production disruptions.
  • Carry out mechanical repairs, including welding, metal fabrication, manual turning, and milling.
  • Interpret and work from technical drawings and engineering schematics.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance to ensure optimal machine performance.
  • Maintain accurate administrative records of all repairs and maintenance work.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 OHS standards.
  • Liaise with the Toolroom and Maintenance Manager to coordinate work priorities.

Requirements

Non-Negotiables:

  • Qualified Artisan Mechanical or Fitting trade.
  • 35 years experience in machine fitting, with CNC maintenance & repair expertise.
  • Proficiency in manual turning & milling, welding, and metal fabrication.
  • Strong fault-finding skills and the ability to assess & repair mechanical equipment.
  • Solid understanding of ISO 9001/45001 OHS standards.
