Your role at St John of God Murdoch

As part of the Engineering team, you will play a vital role in keeping the hospital running at its best by maintaining and repairing buildings, engineering assets and essential services. This includes working across a diverse range of systems such as transformers, switchgear, GPOs, lighting, public address systems, and data and phone cabling—all delivered safely and efficiently.

In this hands-on and impactful role, you will help ensure the hospital remains fully operational, taking pride in delivering reliable services with minimal downtime and directly supporting the care of patients and staff every day.

The Position

  • Preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance (Planned preventative inspection, repair, maintenance and fault finding) of Electrical system (HV, LV Power distribution, Lighting, Earthing, communication, Emergency call systems) so that the hospital quality standards are maintained. Undertake reactive repairs to all types of Electrical and Electronic equipment to ensure that systems are restored to service with minimum interruption.

  • Act as Nominee for the site and fulfil such responsibilities of on-site nominee as stipulated by Energy Safety WA.

  • Perform new installation works (Electrical, communication) and maintain test and completion records as per statutory requirements and update drawings and documents

  • 1st line maintenance and repair of Control systems, Emergency call systems, UPS, switchboards, panels and Bed controllers

  • Undertake reactive repairs to all types of Electrical equipment to ensure that systems are restored to service with minimum interruption.

  • Utilise BMS systems to ensure that the systems are operating correctly and at optimum efficiency.

  • Implementation of minor projects, oversight planning of major electrical installation work generally, and modification work to improve or preserve the performance of equipment and systems.

  • Assist and prepare for annual audit inspection of electrical systems and plant. Maintain PPM Records.

  • Accountable for uninterrupted operation and meeting departing KPIs specific to ownership area

  • Carry out daily / weekly plant room checks including BMS monitoring as covered in maintenance strategy.

  • Make recommendations for improvement of maintenance practices for reduced down time and cost optimisation.

  • On call support including phone support to remote locations managed by Engineering team at Murdoch

  • Provide inputs in the maintenance of adequate stock levels for the efficient operation of Electrical plant and services.

  • Support as required with general maintenance assisting other trades in the engineering team as required / directed and perform all other reasonable tasks as directed by Manager/Supervisor in skill and ability.

  • Complete job history and details in computerised maintenance management system.

  • Perform housekeeping of the work area, workshop and post job clean up.

  • Reporting on job progress to maintenance engineer / administrator and highlight hold ups on a timely manner

The ability to communicate effectively with caregivers, managers, and patients will be essential to understand and respond to requests or issues relating to hospital services and facilities.

This role requires solid experience in commercial building maintenance, covering both planned and reactive works across building plant and services, along with strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills in mechanical building systems.

A strong commitment to safe work practices is expected, together with skills in phone, communications, and data cabling. A self-driven, dynamic, and results-oriented approach, with a focus on continuous improvement, is key to achieving desired outcomes.

Success in this role requires a current Electrician’s Licence issued by Energy Safety WA, as well as experience in electrical fitting within industrial or commercial environments. Completion of the required training to act as the site nominee is essential, along with a positive, “can do” attitude and the ability to work collaboratively with other onsite trades.

Availability to work reasonable additional hours, share callbacks to attend to breakdowns or preventative maintenance after hours and willing to be part of on call roster will be required.
