Your New Role and Responsibilities

LAND 156 is a flagship Australian Defence initiative delivering a cutting-edge Counter-Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (CsUAS) capability. This program will protect ADF personnel and assets from evolving drone threats through a layered system of sensors, effectors, and command-and-control technologies.

We are seeking Electrical Design and Mechanical Design Engineers to join a team delivering complex, integrated capability into operational environments.

These roles will focus on the design and development of physical system nodes, integrating sensors, effectors, communications, power, and computing into a Command & Control (C2) system architecture. You will work closely with systems, software, and integration engineers to deliver ruggedised, deployable hardware solutions for Defence clients.

You will report directly to the Engineering Design Lead and play a hands‑on role across the full engineering lifecycle.

Depending on your discipline, responsibilities will include:

Common Responsibilities (All Roles)

  • Design and development of integrated physical nodes comprising sensors, effectors, power, communications, and computing elements.
  • Contribution to system decomposition, interface definition, and allocation of requirements into hardware designs.
  • Collaboration with systems engineering, software, safety, and integration teams.
  • Support to prototyping, integration, test, and verification activities.
  • Development of engineering documentation aligned with Defence standards (drawings, specifications, reports).
  • Participation in formal design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR).
  • Compliance with Defence engineering governance, configuration management, and assurance processes.
  • Engagement with suppliers and partners to support design, manufacture, and integration.

Electrical Design Engineer

  • Design of electrical architectures including power distribution, wiring, harnesses, and grounding.
  • Schematic capture, cable design, and interface control documentation.
  • Component selection (COTS and Defence‑specific equipment) with consideration of SWaP‑C.
  • Support to EMC/EMI, electrical safety, and environmental compliance activities.
  • Integration of sensors, effectors, and communication systems into platform electrical architectures.

Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Mechanical and structural design of enclosures, mounts, brackets, and assemblies for integrated Defence systems.
  • CAD modelling, drawing production, and tolerance analysis.
  • Design for manufacture, assembly, and maintainability.
  • Consideration of environmental, shock, vibration, and thermal constraints.
  • Support to prototype build and physical integration activities.

What You’ll Bring to Make an Impact

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience designing and integrating complex engineering systems (Defence, aerospace, automotive, maritime, or similar regulated environments).
  • Practical experience delivering engineering designs from concept to production or prototype.
  • Familiarity with formal engineering lifecycle and review processes.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to work across multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to prepare clear, traceable, and audit‑ready engineering documentation.

Don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes – if you meet most of them, we encourage you to submit your application.  We’re most interested in your strengths, what you want to learn and how far you want to go.
