Are you a trade-qualified Diesel Fitter looking for a dynamic field-based role in construction industry?

We’re looking for experienced and motivated Field Service Fitter to join our team in Cairns supporting customers across the General Construction sector in civil, infrastructure, and building projects throughout Far North Queensland. In this hands-on position, you will be responsible for providing high-quality maintenance, diagnostics, and repair services on a range of Caterpillar and allied equipment across construction sites.

This is a permanent position with Monday to Friday or 9-day fortnight opportunities available.

What you’ll be doing
As a Field Service Fitter at Hastings Deering, you will:

  • Deliver reliable onsite service – conduct diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on construction equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Respond effectively to breakdowns – carry out fault finding and corrective actions in the field with a focus on accuracy and minimal downtime.
  • Stay ahead with preventative care – perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance to maximise equipment lifespan and reliability.
  • Provide expert support – offer clear technical advice and assistance to customers to help them operate and maintain their equipment confidently.
  • Keep documentation precise – complete all paperwork, service reports, and safety documentation accurately and in line with company standards.
  • Prioritise safety every time – maintain a strong safety focus, following all company and site requirements to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Strengthen customer relationships – build trust and maintain strong professional relationships through consistent, high‑quality service and communication.

What you’ll need:  

A successful teammate will have experience in: 

  • Bring the right qualifications – hold a recognised trade qualification as a Diesel Fitter or equivalent to perform high‑quality mechanical work.
  • Build on practical industry experience – demonstrate hands‑on experience working with construction and earthmoving equipment across a range of applications.
  • Diagnose with confidence – apply strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills to quickly identify faults and deliver effective solutions.
  • Work independently in the field – operate autonomously in a field‑based environment, managing tasks and time efficiently.
  • Communicate with professionalism – provide excellent communication and customer service to support strong client relationships.
  • Drive safely and responsibly – hold a current driver’s licence (HR licence desirable) to meet operational requirements.
  • Commit to safety and quality – maintain a strong focus on safe work practices and deliver workmanship that meets the highest standards.
