UGL is seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to join our Operations & Maintenance (O&M) team within the Energy & Industrial division. This role plays a critical part in the safe, compliant and timely commissioning of complex electrical infrastructure across major energy and industrial projects nationwide.
You will be responsible for the planning, execution, testing, training, documentation and handover of plant and systems, ensuring all installations operate in accordance with design philosophy, commissioning plans and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Technical
- Review contract requirements, drawings, specifications, work programs and commissioning requirements prior to site mobilisation.
- Inspect site works to verify plant, equipment and services are installed in accordance with UGL requirements, drawings and installation manuals.
- Assist with construction and design issue resolution, ensuring mechanical and electrical installations align with overall design philosophy.
- Supervise and coordinate commissioning activities, maintaining commissioning programs to support on-time project delivery.
- Prepare and manage Commissioning Management Plans, schedules, ITPs, check sheets, SWMS and commissioning procedures.
- Develop commissioning programs identifying all activities, resources and personnel required to meet contractual timelines.
- Liaise with Project Management to ensure resources are mobilised efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Work closely with Commissioning Managers to resolve technical deficiencies in project design.
- Maintain detailed records including daily reports, non-conformances, as-built drawings and progress documentation.
- Interface with clients, subcontractors and other contractors on site, attending meetings as required.
- Liaise regularly with Project Managers and Site Management.
Safety
- Perform all duties in a safe and responsible manner.
- Ensure safe working conditions for employees, contractors and visitors.
- Participate in daily pre-start meetings and safety briefings.
- Use appropriate PPE and safety systems including JSA, risk assessments and pre-work checklists.
- Report hazards, incidents and near misses in line with company procedures.
- Actively participate in safety training and contribute to safety reporting.
Policies, Quality & Compliance
- Comply with all UGL HSSE policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
- Adhere to UGL’s Fitness for Work Policy, including Drug & Alcohol testing requirements.
- Ensure compliance with emergency plans, quality systems (ISO 9001) and safety legislation.
- Maintain compliance with UGL HR, IT, Procurement, Asset Management and Intellectual Property policies.
- Raise and manage non-conformances related to product or process quality.
About You
Qualifications & Experience
- Electrical Engineering degree (essential).
- Electrical trade qualification or tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering.
- Extensive experience in testing and commissioning of electrical systems.
- Proven experience on HV substation or energy projects.
- Strong experience commissioning:
- Transmission circuit protection
- Generator protection
- Buszone and CB fail schemes
- Transformer and feeder protection
- RTUs, HMIs, PLCs and SCADA systems
- DC/AC ancillary systems (UPS, battery chargers, inverters, converters)
- Strong experience in hardwired circuit commissioning, fault finding and rectification.
- Demonstrated experience preparing commissioning plans, ITPs, check sheets and commissioning programs.
- Site experience on major construction projects (essential).
Licences & Tickets
- Current Australian Driver’s Licence.
- Construction White/Blue Card.
- Willingness to work FIFO/DIDO rosters.
