Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.  In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

Job Description

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the CHPP Operations team at Capcoal Mine. Reporting to the CHPP Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent, this is a hands‑on plant engineering role with involvement from front‑end planning through to execution. You will work across sustaining capital, shutdown preparation, reliability improvements, and asset upgrades, providing practical, well‑considered engineering solutions in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, scoping, planning, and delivering mechanical improvement and sustaining capital projects across the CHPP and materials handling systems
  • Providing front‑end engineering input into shutdowns, defect elimination, and asset improvement initiatives
  • Supporting mechanical breakdown investigations, repairs, and contribute to the development of preventative strategies to improve reliability and eliminate failure modes
  • Performing engineering calculations and assessments to support safe, efficient equipment repairs, upgrades, and modifications
  • Providing engineering oversight and support for structural repairs, including engagement with RPEQs for sign‑off where required
  • Managing the project lifecycle from concept and scope development, through design, tendering, execution, and close‑out
  • Coordinating site teams and external contractors to safely deliver project outcomes
  • Applying site project management processes including governance, risk management, progress reporting, and stakeholder communication
  • Providing visible leadership and mentoring, ensuring engineering standards, procedures, and safe work practices are consistently applied

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • A bachelor of Mechanical Engineer or equivalent qualification
  • 3+ years’ experience in a fixed plant or processing environment such as CHPP, minerals processing, aluminium, mining or similar heavy industry
  • Demonstrated experience working on mechanical asset improvements, repairs, and projects within an operating plant.
  • SAP experience is advantageous
  • Ability to work autonomously, whilst collaborating effectively with operations, maintenance and project teams

  • Monday to Friday role (with potential for a 9‑day fortnight)
