About us

Southside Racing operates high-class horse racing and training facilities at both Tynong and Cranbourne, as well as three 7-day-a-week hospitality and entertainment venues – the Cardinia Club, Club Officer and Silks Cranbourne. These venues are a vital part of our business and allow us to provide our members with a wide range of hospitality and entertainment options.

The opportunity

Support the maintenance and development of gardens, grounds, and outdoor areas under the guidance of an experienced workplace supervisor, while undertaking formal training to obtain a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens (or relevant qualification).

Southside Racing is seeking two (2) highly motivated and ambitious individuals to assume the role of Apprentice Parks & Gardens at our Tynong (Pakenham) and Cranbourne facilities. Reporting to the Head Gardener, the role will contribute to the performance of our Racing department and be a key contributor to the success of our venues.

Responsibilities:

  • Work under direct supervision either individually or in a team environment
  • Assist with planting, watering, pruning, weeding, fertilising, irrigation and mulching garden beds
  • Operate and maintain machinery and equipment (e.g. lawn mowers, line trimmers, hand tools)
  • Apply pesticides and herbicides
  • Learn and follow sustainable gardening practices, including pest control and soil care
  • Maintain cleanliness and presentation of lawns, garden areas and associated infrastructure
  • Follow instructions from senior gardening staff and attend scheduled training
  • Assist in the preparation of grounds for special events or race days
  • Report hazards, faults or maintenance issues to supervisors in a timely manner
  • Comply with all workplace safety and environmental procedures
  • You may be required to work at other Southside Racing venues during peak periods

Essential:

  • Genuine interest in this trade
  • Willingness to complete a horticulture apprenticeship in Parks and Gardens
  • Passion for gardening, landscaping, or environmental work
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic
  • Driver’s licence (or currently undertaking driving lessons)
